Stepping Up to the Barre 8

One Woman’s
Journey: Part 3

A great, successful workout is one that you can never truly master. It constantly switches things up, and your body never gets the chance to plateau because there’s always a new challenge around the corner. That’s why the dynamic workouts at Pure Barre are so great at giving real results. The instructors always keep you on your toes, and they use each class to help you work out different muscle groups. Each class becomes a way to discover the reach of your newfound strengths.

That’s one of the reasons that I’ve found Pure Barre so easy to stick with. Each workout is a new experience, and a new opportunity to push your limits.

Found an exercise that wasn’t your favorite? Don’t worry. It won’t be in the next class. Maybe you thought the thigh workout was a little easy this time (does anybody actually ever think that)? Focus on other areas, and prepare to make those thighs shake next time! With Pure Barre, you never have a chance to get bored or complacent, and your instructor makes sure that you always leave the class feeling like you’ve just conquered the world.

And now they’re changing the game again.

This August, Pure Barre rolled out an entirely new mountain to climb–Pure Empower. The 45-minute class will be offered in addition to regular Pure Barre classes, and it promises to transform your body and your mind through a combination of cardio and strength training. The workout utilizes ankle weights and a 6-inch step-up platform to perform multi-directional, dynamic movements that target different muscle groups simultaneously. The invigorating pace is designed to elevate your heart rate for longer periods of time and kick start your metabolism, and the changing movements are a great mental workout as well!

Now I must admit, I have never been a huge fan of cardio-intensive workouts, so I was probably more anxious than excited as I drove to my first Empower class. I grabbed my wrist-and-ankle weights and a pair of 2-pound free weights, found my place next to a platform, and hoped that I was ready for what the next 45 minutes had in store.

The class was very fast-paced, but very doable, and the instructors provided different levels of the exercises for people at different fitness levels. Like regular Pure Barre classes, Pure Empower is also a low-impact workout, meaning that it aims to strengthen your muscles while protecting your joints from any jarring movements. And if, like me, you’re hesitant to give up a day of strength training in favor of a cardio workout, you have nothing to worry about, Empower is the full package.

Pure Empower is no ordinary cardio workout. It still feels like a Pure Barre workout, with similar movements and terminology, which made me feel comfortable in a class that I feared would be out of my depths. That’s not to say that the class wasn’t challenging. It was probably the most difficult workout I’ve had since I started Pure Barre in the first place, but I’m already finding myself impatient to go back and try another Empower class.

That’s what these workouts do, they give you that drive to keep going back, and to keep pushing to do better than before.

Pure Barre is all about exceeding your personal goals, and the atmosphere in the Norman location–lovingly curated by owners Brett and Tiffany Tatum, and all of the wonderful instructors–is more than enough to make you believe that you are capable of anything that you put your mind to. The entire team is so dedicated to helping people realize their true potential because yes, you are stronger than you think you are.

The Pure Barre instructors fill each class with enough positive encouragement to help you push your limits with confidence, and all of the classes–both Pure Barre and Pure Empower–are structured in a way that allows you to make the workout more challenging as your body gets stronger. It’s not supposed to get easy. Where would the fun be in that?

So once again I find myself pushing my limits and expanding my comfort zones because of Pure Barre, and I couldn’t be more thankful. Each month I find myself able to do things that I couldn’t do before, things that I had thought I would never be able to do before I started this journey. And I must say, it’s very empowering.
