Fine French Cuisine With a Hometown Flair
For many, the mere mention of the words “La Baguette” immediately evokes images of the delectable desserts that have long made the restaurant a local favorite. From fresh fruit tarts and cream pies, to trifles, cupcakes and signature fancy cakes, La Baguette’s desserts are featured in dozens of restaurants and hotels stretching from Kansas City to Dallas and beyond.
Norman’s La Baguette West offers these beloved sweet treats, and so much more. Featuring a robust menu paired with an elegant, inviting atmosphere, La Baguette West is the perfect location for a romantic date night, a celebration with friends or a dinner that you won’t soon forget.
For more than 30 years, the restaurant has offered fresh French and European-inspired entrees and desserts. “We are, at heart, a neighborhood restaurant,” says owner Rudy Khouri. “We’ve been part of the Norman community for decades, and this is our home. We appreciate the response that we have always gotten from the community, and serving this food is what we enjoy.”
Khouri opened La Baguette in Norman in 1984, when he was a student at the University of Oklahoma. “I like dessert. I truly just like to eat. When we started, there wasn’t any place to find French desserts, so we started out just concentrating on dessert and croissants. Then I realized it was a lot of work,” he said, laughing.
Khouri says that the La Baguette West, located at 1130 Rambling Oaks Drive, shares many similarities with the larger location on West Main Street in Norman, but with a few important distinctions.
“THE WEST LOCATION IS QUAINTER, MORE OF A BISTRO SETTING,” HE EXPLAINS. “WE WANT OUR GUESTS HERE TO ENJOY A RELAXED DINING EXPERIENCE. FOR US, IT IS LIKE THE FRENCH SAY—IT’S ALL ABOUT THE JE NE SAIS QUOI. WE WANT YOU TO TAKE YOUR TIME WITH YOUR MEAL, ENJOY IT AND MAKE IT A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE.”
The dining experience at La Baguette West begins with a wide array of appetizers, including bruschetta, escargot, and Assiette Parisienne, which features fresh cheeses, pâté, prosciutto and olives. Salad lovers can choose from traditional favorites, including chicken Caesar salads and penne Florentine, or enjoy a warm Chinese chicken salad or steak tortilla salad, served with bell peppers, guacamole and spicy chipotle dressing.
Pasta aficionados will delight in the homemade lasagna, fettuccine with a choice to garlic-parmesan cream or sun-dried tomato pesto sauce, or a Mediterranean pasta with linguini, capers, Kalamata olives, feta cheese and artichoke hearts. The restaurant’s house specialties, served after 5 p.m., include their signature chicken crepes, pecan-crusted tilapia, beef kabobs and Mahi Mahi. A full selection of beer and wine is available, as well as full bar service and a wide array of coffees, cappuccinos and French sodas. In addition to the diverse menu offerings, La Baguette offers both daily lunch and dinner specials. With the bakery next door, the perfect ending to any meal is just steps away.
“The food that we offer can’t be found anywhere else,” Khouri explains. “It’s really about the ingredients that we use. We use organic eggs, fresh ingredients and prime cuts of meat. This helps us bring the best flavor for our customers. It’s the flavors that set us apart from other restaurants, and we do everything from scratch.”
Catering is available for any occasion, as well as private dining options. Breakfast quiches and bakery goods are served from 7 to 10 a.m. Monday-Friday, and brunch is served on weekends.
“If you haven’t had a chance to come try our food, please come and experience it for yourself,” Khouri invites. “Come enjoy something different and experience our cuisine. We love seeing the smiles on people’s faces.”
