Giving Back in a 'Fine' Way 3

Library’s Food for Fines Campaign Runs Nov. 5-14

Avid readers around Cleveland County and the Pioneer Library System service area have the chance to not only give back to fight hunger in their communities but also put a dent in their library fines through the annual Food for Fines campaign.

Hometown libraries of PLS will conduct Food for Fines from Saturday, Nov. 5, through Monday, Nov. 14.

In the Food for Fines program, readers who may have had a little trouble getting their library materials checked back in on time can help take away some or all of their fines by bringing a donation of a non-perishable canned or boxed food item. For each can or box of food, $1 will be wiped off of their fines, up to a $20 total.

One limitation is that any cardholders whose fine total has caused their account to be sent to debt collection will not be eligible for a reduction in that amount.

The most important part of the program is the final result–a significant donation of resources to local agencies that are able to use them to help families in the holiday season. Last year, donations totaled more than 3 tons of food received and donated by hometown libraries, with a total of almost 29 tons of food donated since the campaign began in 2005.

Donations from Norman’s two libraries will benefit the efforts of the Salvation Army of Norman’s local food pantry, as they have for many years. And in Noble, donations to the Noble Public Library will be spread to First State Bank of Noble, First Baptist Church of Noble and Maguire Farm Store in those organizations’ efforts in the community.

And after donating to a good cause, library customers will be right in their hometown library with a chance to experience the collection of more than 700,000 books, DVDs, downloadables and databases offered for free to library card holders.
